Scotch Whisky Industry Cheers Delay in Deposit Return Scheme, Proposed Marketing Restrictions
Scottish First Minister Houmza Yousaf has announced a delay in the implementation of Scotland’s deposit return scheme until at least next March. The system has been under fire from drinks makers since its introduction, and industry leaders said it was not ready to go into effect this summer as originally planned.
In addition, Yousaf also sent a proposed package of alcohol marketing and advertising restrictions back to the drawing board. The proposal had been the subject of a public consultation period, in which the Scotch Whisky Association and other industry groups noted those restrictions would have been onerous for the Scotch Whisky industry. The proposal called for severe limitations on everything from in-store displays and sports sponsorships to branded merchandise at visitors centers.
SWA spokesman Grace Littlejohn praised the move, noting that while the industry is committed to responsible marketing and use of alcoholic beverages, the proposed restrictions would have had a significant impact on the Scottish economy.
