Westland Peated American Single Malt. Photo ©2015 by Mark Gillespie. This single malt from Seattle’s Westland Distillery blends two different mashes after maturation. One is a heavily peated mash, while the other is a pale malt mash, and the two combine to create a peaty whisky that doesn’t overpower its more delicate notes. This whisky won Best in Class for craft-distilled whiskies in the 2015 American Distilling Institute awards.

The nose has a good balance of peat smoke, grilled peaches, apples, muted spices, and a touch of apricots. The taste is consistent with peat smoke, grilled peaches, honey, vanilla, and a hint of citrus with good balance. The finish has a smoky touch that builds back up and lingers with notes of lemon zest, vanilla, and brown sugar. A well-balanced excellent whisky. (April, 2015)
