Springbank 1997 Claret Wood. Image courtesy The Whisky Exchange/Speciality Drinks Ltd.This 12-year-old Campbeltown single malt spent its first nine years in refill ex-Bourbon barrels before being filled into claret wine casks for the final three years before its bottling in 2010. The nose has notes of berry cobbler, toasted oak, earthy touches of garden soil and mushrooms, red grapes, and a hint of brandy. The taste is astringent with notes of brandy, baked oranges, a hint of brine, berry cobbler, and just a hint of smokiness. The finish has a lingering smokiness with hints of berries, brine, oranges, and a hint of nuttiness. Extremely complex. (November, 2018)
