This is something unique to Nikka…a single malt whisky distilled in a Coffey-style continuous still. In Scotland, anything distilled in a Coffey still must be called grain whisky, even if it’s 100% malted barley…but in this case, it’s a good thing that rule doesn’t apply in Japan.
The nose is malty, buttery, and smooth with touches of honey, vanilla, cocoa powder, and a hint of hazelnut. The taste is spicy with clove, cinnamon, and a touch of black pepper that comes alive in a second wave of spiciness on top of honey, vanilla, and dark chocolate notes. The finish has notes of honey, figs, mild spices, and touches of dark chocolate. Unusual and very nice. (November, 2014)
