Laphroaig 2017 Cairdeas Quarter Cask. Image courtesy Laphroaig/Beam Suntory. This is the annual Cairdeas special release from Laphroaig, and the 2017 edition spent six months in quarter-sized casks after being matured for more than five years in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels. The nose is fresh and vibrant with hints of vanilla, wet straw, sawdust, driftwood smoke, and a slight brininess. The taste is spicy and smoky with tangy barbecue sauce, black pepper, honey, and vanilla, along with a peaty smokiness that develops much later than in other Laphroaigs and lasts through the long, classic finish.
