Producing WhiskyCast has given me the opportunity to taste some really amazing whiskies, and I’m pleased to share my tasting notes with you here. You can search my entire database of tasting notes from this page, and I hope you’ll find it useful.
One of the four Private Collection Ultra releases in late 2014 to mark the transition between the third and fourth generations of Urquhart family members at Gordon & MacPhail. This ex-Sherry hogshead is the final cask of 1951 Mortlach in the G&M inventory, and was selected by retired Joint Managing Director David Urquhart and his twin sons Stuart (the company’s Whisky Supply Manager) and Richard (G&M Export Sales Executive). Only 61 bottles were produced.
The nose is reminiscent of the 70-year-old 1940 Mortlach Gordon & MacPhail released in 2009 – fruity and vibrant with notes of orange, mango, passion fruit, hints of molasses, figs, raisins, and a whiff of fresh almonds. The taste starts off soft and gentle, but opens up with a burst of orange and mango, a touch of smoke, and notes of clove and licorice. The finish is mouth-watering, fruity, fresh, and long. Wow!
