Producing WhiskyCast has given me the opportunity to taste some really amazing whiskies, and I’m pleased to share my tasting notes with you here. You can search my entire database of tasting notes from this page, and I hope you’ll find it useful.
When the owners of what was then known as the George T. Stagg Distillery wanted to name a Bourbon after their longtime manager, Elmer T. Lee, in 1985…he agreed on the condition that he be allowed to select the barrels himself. He did just that each Tuesday right up until his death on July 16, 2013, nosing cask samples from the Buffalo Trace inventory.
The nose on Elmer’s namesake Bourbon is very rich with notes of honey, oak campfire smoke, allspice, mild cinnamon, and dark chocolate. The taste is peppery with undertones of honey, rye bread, toasted oak, dark chocolate, and vanilla. The finish is long and smooth with just a bite of spice.
It’s a Bourbon worthy of Elmer’s name and reputation, and if you get a chance to taste it, I recommend you do so. (July, 2013)
