Black Art is Jim McEwan’s expression of the blender’s art in mystical terms, using a recipe of casks known only to him and a handful of trusted colleagues. This edition is 23 years old, and known to use a blend of unpeated malts matured in American Oak and French Oak casks.
The nose has notes of grape jam, honey, driftwood, hints of lemon and lime, seaweed and brine, and is very smooth and inviting. The taste is rich, fruity, and tropical with notes of mango, papaya, and a hint of kiwi fruit, along with vanilla, coconut, dark chocolate, and hints of cinnamon and clove that help provide a great balance. The finish is long with notes of grilled pineapple, hints of peach and apricot, brown sugar, and caramel candy. Outstanding! (April, 2015)
