Luca Mariano Single Barrel Rye. Image courtesy Luca Mariano Distillery. This rye whiskey was distilled at Kentucky’s Wilderness Trail Distillery while Luca Mariano founder Francesco Viola moves forward with plans for his own distillery nearby in Danville, Kentucky. The nose has a good balance of baking spices and oak tannins with hints of honey and brown sugar in the background. The taste has a nice spiciness with notes of black pepper, cinnamon, clove, and allspice complemented by brown sugar, honey, and dried fruits. The finish is long and spicy, but still has a nice balance with dried fruits and brown sugar in the background. (December, 2020)
