WhistlePig Rye Boss Hog VII "Magellan's Atlantic." Image courtesy WhistlePig Whiskey. This is a uniquely complex recipe for WhistlePig – a 17-year-old Rye whiskey originally matured in ex-Bourbon casks, finished first in Spanish Oak, and then a short three days in South American teak casks. The nose is extremely complex with notes of sandalwood, tropical fruits, toasted coconut, baking spices, marzipan, cooked banana, vanilla cream, and a hint of dried flowers. The taste has a nice burst of baking spices, along with red apples, sandalwood, cooked banana, dried flowers, a touch of oak tannins, toasted coconut, vanilla, and a hint of maple syrup. The finish is very long with lingering spices and hints of tropical fruits, toasted coconut, and oak tannins. Unusual taste for a Rye! (October, 2020)
