Nathan Green 1870 Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey. Image courtesy Uncle Nearest Ltd.This is the British Bourbon Society’s bottling of the first Uncle Nearest 1856 single barrel whiskey, and the label reflects Nathan “Nearest” Green’s birth name and the oldest known documentation so far that refers to this distilling pioneer. The nose has a honey sweetness, along with touches of charred oak, caramel ice cream topping, a hint of maple, and muted spices. The spices come alive on the palate with cinnamon, black pepper, and chili powder notes that fade to reveal honey, caramel, and maple notes for a nice balance and complexity. A few drops of water smoothes out the spices while not affecting the overall complexity. The finish is very long and spicy. (December, 2018)
