The 2018 release of Eagle Rare 17 in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is a change from previous editions, in that the bottling strength has been raised to 50.5% ABV from the old 45% ABV strength. The nose has notes of caramel, vanilla, charred oak, touches of pepper and allspice, and a hint of brown sugar. The increased strength is noticeable on the palate, with a great flavor and balance of spices and sweetness. White pepper, allspice, and a hint of ginger root are balanced nicely by caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, a hint of honey, and a subtle touch of mint that comes out late and leads into the finish. That finish is long with spicy notes that fade away slowly and touches of honey, brown sugar, caramel, and mint. Very nice! (October, 2018)
