This release marks a relaunch for Bruichladdich’s Port Charlotte range of heavily peated Islay single malts, and replaces the previous 10-year-old version. This one uses a combination of 65% first-fill ex-Bourbon casks, 10% second-fill Bourbon, and 25% second-fill French wine casks.
The nose has a great peatiness with hints of creosote, iodine, heather, honey, and a touch of oak. The taste is thick, chewy, smoky, and spicy – with a slightly medicinal peat smokiness, spicy notes of white pepper and allspice, honey, oak, and a hint of sea salt. The finish is medium-length and smoky with subtle hints of spice. Excellent! (June, 2018)
