Compass Box Three Year Old Deluxe Blended Malt. Image courtesy Compass Box. Don’t let the name fool you. This is another one of Compass Box’s subtle swipes at the rules requiring that only the age of the youngest whisky in a bottle appear on the label. For the record, there’s 0.4% of three-year-old Clynelish in this blended malt, and the rest of the whiskies in it are a lot older.

The nose has notes of fresh berries, apples, peaches, vanilla, soft spices, and a hint of charred oak. The taste starts off with a waxy mouthfeel, then turns fruity and vibrant with red apples, hints of allspice and cinnamon, vanilla, and a small hint of smoke that comes out as the spices and fruitiness start to fade. The finish has that lingering hint of smoke, along with vanilla, dried apples, and a hint of nutmeg. Excellent! (October, 2016)
