Mackmyra Moment Bärnsten Swedish Single Malt Whisky. Image courtesy Mackmyra. Bärnsten is the Swedish word for “amber”, and describes this 2015 release in Mackmyra’s Moment series. It was made immediately following a batch of peated spirit to get some of the residual aromas without overpowering the whisky, then matured in a combination of French Oak Bordeaux wine casks and Swedish Oak cloudberry wine casks.

The nose is fruity with dried berries, pipe tobacco, old leather, and a kiss of smoke with a slightly herbal touch of juniper (the distillery adds juniper when peating its malt). The taste is smoky, spicy, and thick with baked apples, campfire smoke, grilled pineapple, cinnamon, and pipe tobacco. The finish is long with dried fruits, a kiss of smoke, smoked salmon, oak, and vanilla. Very nice! (December, 2015)
