This is one of the whiskies in Glenmorangie’s 1970’s Collection, of which just ten five-bottle sets were released in 2015. The whisky was originally bottled in 1997 after 26 years of maturation, but several bottles were discovered in the company’s warehouse years later and re-packaged for the 1970’s Collection.
The nose has notes of muted spices, figs, a musty touch of wet dog, beef broth, and an earthy hint of garden soil. The taste is thick and oily with toffee, clove, molasses, figs, dates, and a hint of smoke from the distillery’s use of peat in its floor maltings during that period. The finish is dry with hints of smoke, clove, and cherry pie. (September, 2015)
